HEC GEO HMS & ARC HYDRO TOOL

The procedure for HEC GEO HMS and ARC HYDRO TOOL are given below. You can refer to the video tutorial here.

               Arc Hydro Tool

·         Terrain preprocessing of arc hydro tool (while using this tool, ensure that you open a new window of arc gis (not the saved project with extension .gdb) then click on add data and insert the raster/vectors files.)
o   DEM ManipulationsàFill sinks
o   Flow direction
o   Flow accumulation
o   Stream definition-area min = 227.97 Km2
o   Stream segmentation
o   Catchment grid delineation
o   Catchment polygon processing
o   Drainage line processing
o   Adjoint catchment processing
o   Drainage point processing

·         Use pore point (Create Batch Point at the outlet of the catchment)

·         Watershed Processing
o   Batch watershed delineation (sometime ArcGIS may be needed to be restarted)
·         Flow path tracing- select this tool and then click on the end of each drainage line.
·         Terrain preprocessing
o   Slope

                Now use Geo Hec-Hms.

ü  Project SetupàData management; set the following parameters
Fig. Data Management in HEC GEO HMS

ü  Project SetupàStart new project; click OK.
ü  Add project point at outlet of catchment
ü  Project SetupàGenerate project; click OK.
ü  Then select small basins to merge using select tool and then Basin ProcessingàBasin Merge (Press shift key to select multiple sub basins.)

Ø  Characteristic
o   River length
o   River slope
o   Basin slope (Input RawDem in ‘Input slope grid’)
o   Longest Flow Path
o   Basin Centroid
o   Centroid Elevation
o   Centroid Longest FlowPath
Ø  Parameters
o   Select HMS Processes
o   River Auto Name
o   Basin Auto Name
o   Sub Basin Parameters from raster (Click OK)
Ø  HMS
o   Map to HMS Units
o   Check Data (Check the summary, if all are ‘no problem’ then ok)
o   HMS Schematics
o   Add Coordinates
o   Prepare Data for Model Export
o   Background Shape File
o   Basin Model File
o   Met Model File à Specified Hyetograph
o   Create Hec-Hms Project
Then open the “. hms” file in HEC HMS. “. hms” file is created in the project location where Fdr, Facc, fill, etc. has been created.

  1. Hi, Thank you so much for making these valuable videos/ lessons. I am stuck and badly need help. This is 3rd attempt to 'Generate Project' using HEC GeoHMS tool under Project Setup menu. It is mainly saying that "System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMExption (0x80004005)ERROR. Would you be able to give me some hints how to resolve this issue? if I can overcome this erro, I could proceed next steps.
I highly appreciate your help in this regard.
Thank you and looking forward more valuable and informative lessons soon.
    Regards,
    Tahera

    1. Change the default location of directory to something sample like c:/gis and then this error wont occur.
you can know how to change default loaction in gis website just google it

  2. i changed spatial reference from wgs1984 to utm44n for the dem file, then catchment polygon processing goes to halt and showing arc map not responding many times. if i dont change wgs1984 ,at the slope step it is showing data does not have a spatial reference. plz zhelp me...

    1. Did you define your projection system or transformed? Look by hovering mouse over your DEM if you get correct coordinate (Coordinate are visible at bottom right corner on status bar in arcgis). If you don't get correct coordinate then you need to project it correctly.
